Salsa On1 & Salsa On2
Origins, Timing, and Technical Structure
Salsa On1
Advanced – Origins & Technique
Salsa On1 developed primarily in Los Angeles and the West Coast social dance scene, influenced by performance-based salsa, mambo, and theatrical presentation. The timing emphasizes a forward break on count 1, creating strong directional clarity and visual impact.
For leaders, the foundational footwork is: - 1: Left foot forward - 2: Replace weight - 3: Step back - 5: Right foot back - 6: Replace weight - 7: Step forward
Historically, Salsa On1 evolved alongside stage choreography and competitive performance. The structure favors sharper accents, faster turn initiation, expansive slot usage, and dynamic momentum changes. This timing supports athletic movement, speed, and high visual contrast.
Salsa On2
Advanced – Origins & Technique
Salsa On2 traces its roots to New York City, emerging from the mambo tradition danced at the Palladium Ballroom in the 1950s and later formalized through the Eddie Torres methodology. The timing is built around a back break on count 2, aligning closely with Afro-Cuban musical structures such as the clave, tumbao, and conga patterns.
For leaders, the foundational footwork is: - 2: Left foot back - 3: Replace weight - 4: Step forward - 6: Right foot forward - 7: Replace weight - 8: Step back (commonly counted as 5-6-7)
This timing encourages delayed rotation, grounded weight transfers, continuous body control, and refined use of compression and extension. Historically, Salsa On2 prioritizes musical interpretation, rhythmic clarity, and subtlety over visual emphasis.
All Levels Salsa On2 Shine
This class focuses on solo footwork danced in Salsa On2 timing, emphasizing musicality, rhythm, and body control. Students will develop timing precision, clean weight transfers, coordination, and stylistic clarity while strengthening their connection to the music.
Class material includes structured shine patterns, rhythmic drills, directional changes, and musical phrasing based on the clave and salsa percussion. Variations and layering are provided to accommodate all experience levels, allowing beginners to build a strong foundation while challenging advanced dancers to refine technique, speed, and expression.
No partner required.
Dominican Bachata Shine Class
This class focuses on traditional Dominican bachata footwork, emphasizing rhythm, agility, musicality, and authentic movement. Students will work on fast and syncopated steps, weight changes, taps, syncopations, and playful styling rooted in Dominican bachata culture.
Class material includes structured shine patterns, footwork drills, coordination exercises, and musical phrasing that respond directly to bachata guitar, bongo, and güira. The focus is on lightness, precision, and rhythmic expression rather than partner connection.
Open to all levels, with layered variations offered so beginners can build strong foundational footwork while advanced dancers refine speed, clarity, and musical interpretation.
